10 August 2018 - Horizon Air

On the night of August 10th, 2018, a mechanic named Richard Russell at Seattle-Tacoma Airport stole a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 operated by Horizon Air (a subsidiary of Alaska Airlines), took it for a joyride, did several stunts, before crashing it into Keytron Island near Puget Sound, killing himself.

This transcript is split into 2 parts. (There may be more, the parts where the previous stuff appears to have nothing to do with something later in the transcript, that may be a part.)

The following is the ATC Transcript.

Key:

Part 1:
SEA TWR: Seattle Tower
ASA322: Alaska Airlines Flight 322
QXE2728: Horizon Air Flight 2728

Part 2:
SEA APP: Seattle Approach
SEA TWR: See Part 1
HIJACKER: Richard Astley
???: Unknown

(Start Part 1)
SEA TWR:
Aircraft on C, line up Runway 16C, say your callsign?

(Pause)

The Dash-8 on Runway 16C, say your callsign.

(Pause)

The Dash-8 on Runway 16C, say your callsign.

(Pause)

Who's the Dash-8 holding on Runway 16C?

(Pause)

Horizon 2728, verify you're in the left turn.

QXE2728:
We're in the left turn, Horizon 2728.

SEA TWR:
Horizon 2728, thank you. Contact Departure.

QXE2728:
Departure, see ya'!

ASA322:
Tower, Alaska 322, that aircraft just passed off our right, and it's rolling.

SEA TWR:
What's the aircraft on Runway 16C?

ASA322:
His wheels are smoking left and right. He's rolling now right down the runway.

SEA TWR:
I'm not even talking to him.

ASA322:
We saw him coming down the cargo area via D.

SEA TWR:
Which cargo area, 1 or 2?
(End Part 1, Start Part 2)

SEA APP:
I'd say it'd be a better option, I think, if you'd try to land it or even land it on the water.

HIJACKER:
Yeah.

(Pause)
Hey, is that pilot on? I wanna know what the weather is going to be like in the Olympics.

???:
If you can see the Olympics, the weather is good. I can see the Olympics from my window and it looks pretty good over there.

HIJACKER:
Alright, 'cause I hit some turbulence around right here but there's no clouds, Charlie.

???:
Oh, that's just the wind blowing over all of the bumpy surfaces there.

HIJACKER:
Alright, copy that.

SEA APP:
Hey, Rich, if you could, maybe start a left hand turn, start turning back around because if you get too close to the Olympics, you won't be able to hear us anymore.

(Pause)

Turn back around here. Like I said I just want to keep talking to you and if you keep going towards the Olympics now, we won't be able to hear each other.

(Pause)

Turn back around so we can stay in contact with you.

SEA TWR:
...Waiting for this issue to be resolved so we can clear the taxiways.

HIJACKER:
I got a lot of people that care about me. It's going to disappoint them to hear that I did this. I'd like to apologize to each and every one of them. Just a broken guy... I've got a few screws loose... I guess. Never really knew it until now... Just, you know...

(Pause)

Man, have you been to the Olympics? Those guys are gorgeous! Holy smokes...

SEA APP:
Yeah I have been out there. It's always a nice drive.

(Pause)

Yeah, I bet you do. I haven't done much hiking over there. But if you can start a left turn and turn back towards the East, I know you're getting a good view there, but if you go too much further in that direction, I won't be able to hear you anymore.

HIJACKER:
Alright... hey, pilot guy! Can this thing do a backflip, you think?
(Pause)

I'm at 2100, I started at like 30 something.

SEA APP:
(...100 pounds of fuel...) Rich, you said you have 2100 pounds of fuel left?

HIJACKER:
Yeah, I don't know what the burnage, burnout is like on a takeoff, but it burned quite a bit faster than I expected.

SEA APP:
And (very good. Thank you.) right now he's flying around and he just needs some help controlling his aircraft.

HIJACKER:
(Very good.) No, I mean, I don't need that much help. I've played some video games before. I would like to figure how to get this cabin altitude... like I know where the box is, I would like to get some, make it pressurized or something so I'm not so lightheaded.

SEA APP:
There is the runway. Just about your right side and about a mile. Do you see that? That's the McCord Field.

HIJACKER:
Oh man, those guys might rough me up if I land there. I think I might mess something up there, too. I wouldn't wanna do that. Hopefully, oh and they probably got anti-aircraft!

SEA APP:
No, they don't have any of that stuff. We're just trying to find a place for you to land safely.

HIJACKER:
Yeah, I'm not quite ready to bring it down yet but holy smokes! I gotta stop looking at the fuel because it's going down quick!

SEA APP:
Okay, Rich, if you could, could you start a left hand turn and we'll take you down to the southeast, please?
HIJACKER:
This is probably jail time for life, huh? I hope it is for a guy like me.

(Pause)

Minimum wage. We'll chalk it up to that. Maybe that'll grease the gears a little bit with the higher ups. Maybe... yeah.

(Pause)

I feel like I need to be... what do you think? Like 5000 feet at least to be able to pull this barrel roll off?

(Pause)

I don't mind just shooting the *unknown* with you, guys. But it's all business, you know.

SEA APP:
If you wanted to land, probably the best bet is that runway just ahead and to your left. Again, that's the McCord Field. If you want to try, that might be the best way to set up and see if you can land there. Or just like the pilot's suggestion, another option would be over Puget Sound into the water.

HIJACKER:
Dang, have you talked to McCord yet? Cause I don't think I'd be happy with you telling me I can land like that because I can mess some stuff up.

SEA APP:
Well, Rich, I already talked to them and just like me, what we wanna see is you not getting hurt or anybody else getting hurt, so like I said, if you wanna try to land, that's probably the best place to go.

HIJACKER:
Hey, I want the coordinates for the orca. You know, the mama orca with the baby. I wanna go see that guy.

(Pause)

Dammit, Andrew, people's lives are at stake here!

SEA APP:
Rich, don't stay stuff like that.

HIJACKER:
No, I'm not, I don't wanna hurt no one. I just want you to whisper sweet nothings into my ear.

(Pause)

Hey, do you think if I land this successfully, Alaska will give me a job as a pilot?

???:
You know, I think they would give you a job doing anything if you can pull this off.

HIJACKER:
Yeah, right!

(Pause)
Nah, I'm a white guy.

(End of recording.)
